Physical Activity

Early Thursday morning, 23rd June, the 5th and 6th class boys and girls headed for Coachford for what was their first proper school tour after the last couple of years. When we arrived in Coachford we were greeting a fantastic team who divided us into 2 groups.
One group did group activities during the morning while another learned how to make fires in the wilderness. We were very fortunate with the weather as the sun beamed down on us all day.
After these activities, both groups merged and had great fun on the giant, sky high trampolines! We had worked up an appetite on these so had lunch.

After lunch time, we got our wetsuits on and headed for the water obstacle course. This was by far the best part of our day! We had an hour on the water with the glowing sun laughing and making memories and splashes!

Once swimming was over, we broke into our two groups again and swapped activities back to team bonding and the wilderness. One group got a sneaky chance at archery which was brilliant!
We had a great time and the bus home was full of chat about the day!

During the year, pupils from 4th, 5th and 6th classes took on the role of playground leaders in the school yard at break times. They set up and timetable so that there would be leaders helping each class in their section of the school yard. They organised a great variety of games and activities for the children in juniors, seniors, 1st and 2nd classes to partake in. They showed great leadership, patience and understanding while working with the younger pupils in the school. It was a great success.

Run Around Ireland National Dates: March 22nd โ€“ April 30th

As we work towards achieving an 'Active School Flag' we have some challenges to undertake to help us to be more active during each school day!One of these is the Run Around Ireland Challenge.

ASF encourages ALL schools to commit to the 4-week โ€˜Run Around IRELANDโ€™ challenge during the spring term.

  • It is a great way for pupils to learn about Irelandโ€™s most famous landmarks, and to bring learning outdoors.
  • It supports the Athletics strand of the PE curriculum and gives pupils the opportunity to develop good running technique.

Each class has run laps of the yard every day to increase fitness levels, increase concentration and energy levels and have fun๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒ We have had competitions within the school each week to see which class would run the most laps/kms during the week. The Active School committee are ensuring that everyone keeps up with the challenge each day and records there own laps and then they collect the information each afternoon from all classes. They ensured all calculations were done at the end of each day and made a table of the list of laps each class completed, displaying the leader board around the school so that all classes could compare what they had done that week. It has been a great success and everyone has really gotten into it! ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒ
