Engineering

Ms. Collum/ Ms. Gilbourne's 1st class demonstrated some science experiments to 6th class. This was very exciting.

They performed colour changing milk using milk, food colouring and cotton swabs dipped in fairy liquid (the soap molecules want to attach to the fat molecules in the milk which causing the food colouring to react like exploding fireworks 🎆).

Dancing ghosts which showed how static electricty works using our paper ghosts and balloons.  👻 🎈

Finally, the favourite by far was our elephant toothpaste using hyrdrogen peroxide, food colouring and yeast!! The hydrogen peroxide and yeast make a chemical reaction when they meet. It was definitely enough to clean the elephant's teeth in our opinion! 🐘 🪥

In Term 1 this year, we read the novel 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo. We loved this adventure story which was all about a boy named Michael who sailed around the world in a yacht called the 'Peggy Sue' with his parents and the family dog. All was going great until Michael and Stella fell overboard one night during a storm. They were mysteriously saved and found themselves on a deserted island with an old man named Kensuke! The island is small but has lots of landmarks on it that the writer describes very well in his novel.

We decided to recreate this island for our 4th Class technology project. Using our ipads, we host a world where we can all log onto and build and work on it together from scratch. We have to communicate with each other to make sure we are making progress. We assign jobs for us to do, for example three teams built the shore line and when this was finished another three teams created the sea. We are currently planning out the different landmarks of the island, such as the two tall hills at either end of the island and the cave in which Michael slept.

We are really excited about how our island is going to look by the time we complete it! Keep an eye out for more screenshots and videos of our island as it progresses!

Junior Infants decided to try and save Humpty Dumpty from breaking when he fell off the wall!!

We made predictions on what materials would save Humpty and what materials would not.

Then we tested out our materials 🥚.

We recorded our answers 🔎.

Strand Unit: Materials and Change

Junior Infants used blocks to estimate and measure how tall the Easter Bunny was 🐰.

First class had a great time participating in activities with the Nutty Scientist.  He demonstrated how air can be so effective as a force.  He told us some fascinating facts and showed us how things work. We then got chances to see for ourselves!

Mrs Cronin's First Class demonstrating science activities to third class pupils.  The first investigation looked at the effect of "slope" on the speed of toy cars. The second investigation examined the transparency of various materials.  The third group explored static electricity.

Senior Infants had lots of fun estimating and checking how many scoopfuls/egg cups/ jam jars of rice various containers could hold. Excellent estimating, checking and recording guys!

Senior Infants had a great time enjoying all things maths related during Maths Week 2022.

We went on a Maths Trail around the school.

We explored the Number 7 with concrete materials, on the iPad & even during our Art Lesson through paint & masking!

We enjoyed the 10 Frame Coloured Counters barrier game.

We explored the Maths Week Under the Sea interactive poster

We took on  the Maths Week Halloween Party challenge

We really enjoyed Maths Week in Senior Infants!

Spring arrived in Junior Infants recently with a visit from Basil the Lamb! 🐏
