We had great fun in third class celebrating maths week with lots of games. We played 'Guess my number', 'place value face off', we made tangram shapes, played team tables challenge ๐Ÿ™Œ and we have a week long tables champion challenge! Congratulations to all who took part ๐Ÿ˜Š

During Maths Week, we created 2D shapes using lollipop sticks and bluetac. Check out some of the interesting shapes we made!

We had lots of fun in Senior Infants during Maths week 17-21 October 2022.ย

1. We enjoyed exploring the Under the Sea Maths Week Poster.

2. The Halloween Party Activity was challenging but lots of fun!!!ย

3. The rain held off long enough for us to carry out Our Maths Week Scavenger Hunt!

4. We had great fun during our Friday Numeracy Stations - Mental Maths /Number 7 Art / number 7 games on the iPads / Maths Week Ten Frame Barrier Game.

We loved Maths Week 2022!! ย ๐Ÿ’™

Maths Week 2022 โœ–๏ธโž—โž•โž–

We really enjoyed doing a maths trail around the school grounds- counting, looking at shapes & colours!

We used 2D shapes during construction time to build lots of different items!

We used our maths eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ to study the Gingerbread man poster!

We learned lots about 3D shapes this week too!!

We were learning about properties and characteristics of materials by creating a tinfoil boat.

We identified and investigated a wide range of materials in our environment and identified how these materials are used.

The most stable tinfoil boat was able to hold 89 marbles !

Junior Infants are brilliant at sorting!

For Maths Week our teacher gave us lots of random collections to sort. We had buttons ๐Ÿ”˜, ribbons ๐ŸŽ—, stones ๐Ÿชจ and beads ๐Ÿ“ฟ.

We sorted by colour, by size and by texture. It was lots of fun!

We are learning about our colours ๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ต๐ŸŸก๐ŸŸข.

For Maths Week we went on a colour hunt around the school. Each child had a colour card and had to find objects that matched their colour.

We have a very colorful school! ๐ŸŒˆ

Junior Infants went to the moon for Space Week ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿš€

In pairs we designed our rockets ๐Ÿš€.

We stuck our rockets onto balloons which were tied with clothes pegs.

Each balloon was stuck onto a line of string.

When we shouted blast off, our astronauts released their balloon rockets and they travelled along the string! It was so exciting!! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

We have some budding astronauts here in Juniors! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿš€

Junior Infants have spent the month of October learning all about Autumn. We have been studying the Hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” and learning about 'The Big Sleep' or Hibernation.

We decided to make a Hedgehog Hotel, where Hedgehogs can come and hibernate.

We went to the river bank and collected lots of twigs and dried leaves ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚. We cut out holes in a cardboard box and covered it in a sheet of plastic, to keep it warm. It was important that our Hedgehog Hotel went under a covered tree where it is hidden.

Thanks to the sixth class boys and girls who helped us!ย

We hope that we will have some guests over the Winter ๐Ÿฆ”๐Ÿฆ”

"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time to plant a tree is now" - Chinese proverb. ๐ŸŒฟ

We read the story 'Little Acorns' which followed the journey of the little acorn when he fell off the oak tree.๐ŸŒฐ

We learned all about the Life Cycle of an Oak tree and how it will take 20 years for one to be fully grown!ย

To celebrate Tree Day, each group planted an acorn. We put them in the School Polytunnel where they will be nice and warm and we will water them every day.ย

We will have to check back in 20 years time! ๐ŸŒณ

Class: Junior Infants

Strand: Living Things

Strand Unit: Myself

We used our Five Senses to explore different materials in our classroom:

๐Ÿ– Touch: We explored the feel of different textured materials in our 'feely bag'.

๐Ÿ‘ƒ Smell: Using essential oils on cotton pads, we analysed different smells. Lavender was a firm favourite!

๐Ÿ‘ Sight: We played 'I Spy' in our groups.

๐Ÿ‘‚Hearing: Using shakers and bells we explored different sounds and how we hear them.

๐Ÿ‘… Taste: We experienced the different tastes of sour jelly beans. Some were nicer than others!

In science, third class investigated  rigidity and flexibility in materials and undertook a STEM project to see who could build the tallest tower!

During Space Week 2022, Senior Infants made water bottle rockets.

We launched them using two pieces of long string.

We had a blast!! ๐Ÿ’ฅ ๐Ÿš€

On Thursday 6th October, to mark Tree Day 2022 Senior Infants planted a native Irish Holly Tree with Noel. We look forward to watching it grow over the years ahead.

We also explored the school grounds & found lots of different types of trees - evergreens, mountain ash, ash, silver birch, crab apple, hawthorn & beech.

In class we learned about the different parts of a tree.
To finish up we made edible Autumn Trees - they were delicious! We really enjoyed celebrating Tree Day in Senior Infants.

We designed a straw rocket.

We learnt about how air can be used as a force to make our paper rockets move.

Check out some of the fun things we've been up to in 1st class this September.

Science: We've been learning about our senses by making popcorn, doing blind touch and smelling experiments.

Art: We mixed the primary colours red, blue and yellow to make secondary colours green, orange and purple. We made Mr Potatoes heads too.

Religion: We learned about baptism and visited our local church to find the baptismal font and the paschal candle.

PE: Athletics with Noel

Maths: We explored addition up to 15.

After a hard week's work, we love Golden Time on Friday afternoons!
