Junior Infants had great fun during science week this year!

๐Ÿงช Dancing raisins: We explored what would happen if we put raisins into a cup of 7up. The carbon dioxide (fizz) in the 7up lifts the raisins to the surface, making them dance!

๐Ÿงช Skittle rainbows: We set up a paper plate with a packet of skittles lined up around the plate. When we poured water onto the plate the water melted the sugar and food colouring on the skittles, making a rainbow on the plate. ๐ŸŒˆ

The boys and girls in Seomra Alice Junior Room loved being scientists as they combined sensory play with science experiments! They really enjoyed dissolving frozen baking soda balls by squirting them with lemon juice ๐Ÿ‹ and dipping the frozen baking soda balls into bowls of lemon juice! ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ‹๐ŸฅผThey created a chemical reaction between an acid and a base!!

Last week we experimented with pento beans to see how they grow. We placed the beans in moist cotton wool and put them on the window for some light. They started to grow really fast ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ˜€ It is important for plants to have light and water to grow.

Senior infants really enjoyed testing various materials over science week. We used carpet, bubble wrap and paper towels to see what would be best to make a road for our car. We found the paper towel was the best as there was little friction and the car was able to smoothly move on it. We also made parachutes ๐Ÿช‚. This was lots of fun testing out what material would be best, we used tinfoil, paper towels and cling film. All materials worked but the cling film was tricky to make sure it didn't stick together.

We completed a maths trail in the classroom and outside for Maths week.

๐ŸงชWe experimented with slopes in our sensory garden to see how fast the different types of balls travelled down the shoot slopes and which ones fell off before landing in the pot!

๐ŸงชWe named, examined, cut and tasted lots of different fruit๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿ

๐Ÿงช We used different types of building blocks to construct structures of different shapes and sizes ๐Ÿ‘ท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ท๐Ÿป๐Ÿงฑ

๐ŸงชWe made lemon volcanos using lemons, baking soda and food colouring ๐Ÿ‹๐ŸŒ‹

Junior Infants demonstrated The Skittles Rainbow Experiment ๐ŸŒˆ  & Dancing Raisins to First Class.

First Class demonstrated The Cola & Mentos Explosions ๐Ÿ’ฅ and The Alka Seltzer/Vitamin C Film Canister Rockets ๐Ÿš€ to Junior Infants.

Strand: Materials & Change Strand Unit: Heating & Cooling

We changed milk (liquid) into a solid (curds) & liquid (whey).

Strand:Energy & Forces  Strand Unit: Forces

1. We read the story โ€œWhat Floats in a Moat?โ€ by Lynne Berry and then made plasticine boats - 7/26 boats floated ๐Ÿšค

2. We created explosions with Cola and Mentos. We experimented with Diet Cola and Cola, Mint and Fruit Mentos.

3. We explored Potential & Kinetic Energy when we made lollipop stick catapults & fired pom-poms!

4. We sent Lego men flying into the air with our Alka Seltzer & Vitamin C Film Canister Rockets ๐Ÿš€

We had a great week. Well done to all our little scientists.โค๏ธ

In Seomra Alice Junior Room we love exploring different foods! We visit the kitchen every Friday to make and try different foods! We use our counting skills, our measuring skills and mixing skills!

We used pattern templates to make Halloween themed Lego Mosaics: spiders, ghosts, pumpkins, tractors, apples and leaves!

We had lots of number fun in First Class during Maths Week 2021. We went on an outdoor number trail, made animal strips to 20, played pumpkin doubles & carried out a Smarties Data activity where we got to eat our smarties when finished โค๏ธ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ

The boys and girls in Seomra Alice love doing construction and making structures. We love using lots of different building ,materials.

This week in Mahoonagh the children of 5th Class completed a variety of Science Projects and then presented them to the children of Senior Infants.

We love using ICT for our maths in Seomra Alice junior room

The boys and girls in seomra Alice junior room had lots of fun doing activities for Maths week! We did lots of number puzzles, made patterns, played maths games on the board, sorted shapes and used 3D shapes for construction.
